Better Lifter?

Post by gorilla69 on Mon Feb 08, 2010 12:00 pm

Having a medium sized Rhombus sled which I generally use for lifting line laundry, I've found that on occasions the sled wanders from side to side. Would a Rok be any better, perhaps more stable in flight? Help!
Keef.

Missing The Point?

Post by gorilla69 on Mon Feb 08, 2010 12:33 pm

Yes, thank you for that JB. I rather feel you're missing the point somewhat. For sure the Blade series of kites are certainly very good lifters in their own right, but I would like my feet and body to be securely and firmly anchored to the ground whilst flying.
I'm sure I said line laundry in my thread, using the kite you've mentioned would probably make me the line laundry!!!! LOL! LOL!

Kite With No Lines

Post by gorilla69 on Tue Feb 09, 2010 10:04 am

Actually JB, it probably does matter. Would you classify this as a kite, or an aircraft? No strings attached, remote control.
Come to think of it, your colour scheme isn't it! LOL!!

Any guesses?

"Flying Bum?"

Nice one Kels, I can see where you're coming with that. LOL! But to me, if the propeller was pointing downwards, it would look more of a, 'Over the shoulder boulder holder'..........if you get my drift! Some used to call them Basques, a style of Corset. LOL!

Marconi??

Post by gorilla69 on Wed Feb 10, 2010 11:58 am

mark wrote:It might not look much... but it's historic.

My guess would be: The kite was used to lift radio antennae many hundreds of feet in the air. Probably used around the 1900's by Guglielmo Marconi in his wireless experiments, shortly before he won the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1909. As I said, this is only my guess. LOL!

A pioneer of the heavy-lift kite was Baden Baden-Powell, pre-WWI aviation pioneer and guiding force behind the Royal Aeronautical Society. In the 1890's he developed large hexagonal-shaped "Levitor" kites which were intended to be used by the army in order to lift a man for aerial observation. In 1901 radio pioneer Guglielmo Marconi made the first successful transatlantic wireless (radio) tests by raising the antenna 400 feet by means of the Baden-Powell Levitor Kite. Marconi also experimented in shore-to-ship radio communication from Babylon in 1901, possibly using these kites to raise the antenna.

and of course theres the cody!!!!

Spot on guys! Who's the kite guru now?

That was the Baden-Powell Levitor which was used on December 12, 1901 when the first radio signal was transmitted across the
Atlantic from Cornwall, England to St John's, New Foundland.

Keef, medical advice... chose your lifter well and it will reduce the load on your knees!

Load that Lifter.

Hi Mark, cheers for the praise and the historic lesson. Stu obviously researched the subject matter very well, whereas mine was only a guess. LOL!
The right lifter may well reduce the load on my knees, but will play havoc on my shoulder sockets. By the way, we are talking kite lifters and not shirt lifters aren't we?? LOL!

Kite lifters for sure.

Monkey bars will strengthen up your shoulder sockets and take the load off your knees!

Simples.

To answer the original question, no, most kites will wander when wind conditions are such to cause wandering, those that don't are still on the ground in their bags cos they won't fly anyway.
From what I have seen when Roks become overpowered they are likely to roll over and dive toward the ground at increasing speed the sled will do something similar but hurts less if you happen to be in the landing zone.

Senseless Sensibility

Thanks Bruce. I knew if I waited long enough, someone would come along with a sensible reply.
As you may know, I am normally the sensible one on the forum, but so glad to be able to meet a fellow member, who is perceptible to the intellect and understanding of one who has the least comprehension of the mobilities and complexities of any type of kite or thus related. Once again, I thank you.
